The Eloise W. Martin Galleries of the Applied Arts of Europe present more than three hundred objects made between 1600 and 1900—a period of profound transformation in European material culture. The redesign of these room was not only about reorganizing a collection, but about creating a space where objects could be seen anew, no longer as silent witnesses of the past, but as interlocutors that continue to speak of innovation, taste, commerce, and cultural exchange. The AAE Galleries were conceived as spaces for encounter—between object and viewer, past and present. The central hall encourages movement, a continuous flow shaped by curatorial intention and the gravitational pull of the works themselves. By contrast, the adjacent ceramics gallery offers intimacy: a quiter atmosphere that invites pause and contemplation. Even the display cases, act as small stages—silent yet expressive structures that elevate each object while weaving a broader narrative across the room.
