Cultural Centre Astoria

Cultural Centre Astoria

Cultural Centre Astoria, Malaga, Spain2024

The project for the Cultural Centre Astoria consolidates the east side of Plaza de la Merced, and acts as part of a wider ensemble of heritage elements. The building seeks both to be part of this significant environment and to define a new urban architecture with its own character and identity.
As a celebration of the wonderful climate of the city, the volume opens towards the outside through wide and green loggias that give singularity, enhance the importance and public vocation of the building, and strength the visual connections between with the Cultural Centre and the city of Malaga.
The foyer of the building is located on the south side of the plot, adjacent to the city centre. It is shaped as a vertical scenographic space, flooded by a filtered zenithal light and open to the archaeological excavations on the lower level.
The foyers on different levels lead to the green terraces in the loggias, which extend the public space to the outside and open up views of the city.
The main hall consists of two levels, both with retractable seating, which gives great flexibility of use. It is accessible from the foyer and, in the case of particular events or performances, it can be opened directly onto the square on the ground floor through an elongated doorway. This high permeability allows the theatre space to be understood as a civic hall, as an extension of the Plaza de la Merced inside the building.
