20 years of Barozzi Veiga
Barozzi Veiga celebrates 20 Years! On 31 May collaborators and firends joined current and former team to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The practice was established in 2004 in a small rented apartment in Barcelona, following the first important competition win. Its works on both public and private commissions—with a focus on cultural, civic and educational buildings—has been since then widely awarded, exhibited and published in the specialist press.
Today, the atelier comprises an international team of 30 staff working on a diverse range of projects around the world and can look back on 10 completed buildings around Europe.
Cultural Centre Astoria
Barozzi Veiga won the competition for the Cultural Centre Astoria, located in historical core of the city of Malaga. The project consolidates the east side of Plaza de la Merced, and acts as part of a wider ensemble of heritage elements. The building seeks both to be part of this significant environment and to define a new urban architecture with its own character and identity. As a celebration of the wonderful climate of the city, the volume opens towards the outside through wide and green loggias that give singularity, enhance the importance and public vocation of the building, and strength the visual connections between with the Cultural Centre and the city of Malaga.

Disclosing images of the Kursaal Casino Knokke‑Heist
The project for the renovation and extension of the Casino Knokke-Heist to be transformed into a new cultural and leisure centre has been released. The proposal—a project of about 43 000m2, accommodating an event space, an art hall, a nightclub, a casino, a restaurant and wine bar and a car park—is a confrontation between old and new. The ambition is to restore the overall cohesion of the building and create a coherence with the new additions. The dichotomy between continuity with the existing and the desire for a new identity is translated into a single new volume with a poetic meaning for Knokke-Heist.
New project in Brest
Following an international competition, Barozzi Veiga’s proposal for the PortziX Architecture Competition was selected as the winning design. Ideally located on the cliff, facing the Atlantic Ocean and overlooking the Goulet de Brest, the new building for Exail group is conceived as a compact and pragmatic project open towards the landscape. The expression of the architecture is concentrated in the slim shape of its volume, completed by some adjunct elements, influenced by a certain naval world. The design meets a series of demanding challenges, ranging from the adaptability and flexibility of the spaces, the minimization of the building’s environmental impact, as well as the cohesion and well-being of the employees desired for this site.

2022
Aesop Store in Barcelona
Barozzi Veiga completed the project for Aesop’s first store in Barcelona. The design transforms an old watch shop located in the building Casa Mumbrú, an original construction from 1882 corresponding to Pere Puig Poch and reformed, between 1912 and 1919, by the modernist architects Juli Maria Fossas. In this context, the new store’s facade is defined as an element that gives continuity to what surrounds it and, at the same time, as a singular moment in the whole, an entrance. Familiar and alien at the same time, a simple dark metal door enigmatically appears between two of the columns of the building in which the store is located.

Oolite Arts
The project for Oolite Arts’ new home in Miami has been released. Oolite Arts is both a community and a resource, providing artists with studio space and exhibition opportunities.
In an industrial area that has undergone recent significant transformation, the proposal creates an oasis that is both a place of quiet for artists and a space of encounter with the local community, highlighting the civic value of the institution. The program is organized like a small village around an exuberant garden. The balance between intimacy and openness towards the neighbourhood is expressed by the apparently hermetic urban plinth, which allows a glimpse of the garden from the entry passage, and by the landscape of towers which serve variously as skylights, wind catchers, solar chimneys and water tanks, creating a highly efficient bioclimatic environment and expressing the importance of light and climate as elements of the project.
